I played a game today against Colton Hatch’s Adeptus Custodes at 2000 points.  I recorded the game, but the SD card corrupted.  I’m broken-hearted especially since it was my first win with my Necrons 76-68.  Close but definitely a cigar.

I tried out my Night Scythe Bomb aka Tootsie Pop Drop.  1x Night Scythe, 11x Warriors, 8x Lychguard, 1x Technomancer (going to rock a Chronomancer next time).  1) Deploy all next to Night Scythe out of sight, 2) Scoop all up on first turn and jet into positions, (another second Chronomancer lays down a 5+ invuln) 3) if the Scythe is killed use Curse of the Phaeron to auto-explode, then deploy your units, Warriors on the outside (as the hard candy shell) and Lychguard and Cryptek in the middle.  4) Now you have a very inconvenient mini-army wherever you want on the board.  Watch out for surrounds to auto-kill your guys for no reason.  Or use Emergency Disembarkation stratagem.

I used a Technomancer, but won’t make that mistake again.  The Technomancer cleans up problems after they happen.  Better to use Chronomancer to prevent them from happening to begin with with 5+ invuln.  Remember his buff also allows re-rolls to charges.

You can put Iluminor Szeras or a Skorpekh Lord into a Scythe as well.  OR maybe just more scary melee things.

Another brutal beatdown for Shawn. At least I made it to turn three without being to the “mop up” stage.

As usual, I am making a lot of mistakes. Forgetting abilities, failing to properly screen out deep strikers, and mispositioning units. Ghost Arks drifting away from units of Warriors, not shooting pistols and so forth. However, I am getting better. This time I brought a unit of ten Lychguard who helped my Warriors a lot. The basic Warriors are great at taking and holding objectives, but need a bodyguard. Their reanimation abilities are not enough to keep them around. I also love my Gauss Reapers (the 12″ assault gun on the basic warriors), but they rarely get to shoot it as they are caught up in close combat right away. So maybe, trying to mix in some rapid fire 24″ weapons next time.
It’s my seventh game with my Necrons, so I don’t expect to be a master yet, and I definitely see improvement. It’s like anything else. It take a hundred man-hours to get decent, and ten thousand hours to be a Master.

As I played in my second ITC event ever today and a lot of the community talk surrounding Warhammer is revolving around a high profile cheating experience I felt like it was the perfect time to share my new player experience in this hobby of ours. I have about 15 or so games under my belt, six of which have been in a competitive ITC setting. During this time I have had the pleasure of playing against or discussing with many people in the Utah Warhammer community including some of the top competitive players in our state. I can say without a doubt that I have not had a single bad experience during my time jumping into this hobby and getting into the competitive scene. That doesn’t mean that there will never be a bad experience, run in with a cheater, or just someone with a bad attitude but that is the extreme exception not the norm. If you’re interested in playing casually ask for a game, there’s a ton of players looking for a casual game regardless of skill level. If you’re interested in the competitive side of Warhammer I can vouch from experience that this community is a great place to jump into the ITC world and now is a great time for it as the tournament scene is growing with amazing TO’s pushing the community. Here’s some lessons about Warhammer and our community I’ve learned in my short tenure getting into this hobby. (In no particular order)
1-Warhammer is a broad hobby, there’s the painting side, casual playing side, tournament side, literature and lore side. You can have such a fulfilling experience regardless of your preference which is 100% ok and what makes Warhammer great. You can get out of Warhammer what you want to put in. You can be the person that paints once a month, has a game twice a year, or the person grinding tournaments; as long as you get enjoyment from it you’re doing it right!
2-Ask questions! It’s ok to not know all the rules all the time, especially army specific ones. Warhammer is complex game with a lot of rules, no one expects you to memorize every army. There’s a reason we have codex’s we can reference during the game.
3-Now is a great time for Utah Warhammer. We have some extremely dedicated TO’s, teams, and community members that are actively pushing and growing the Utah scene. Especially on the tournament side, what is happening in Utah is very exciting to watch develop.
4-Warhammer is a high variance game. As with most dice games Warhammer is extremely high variance. There is some variance that can be removed with army selection and strategy but in the end there will always be a high degree of variance. Army’s aren’t always balanced and there is also a lot of matchup variance. First turn advantage can make a huge difference in some matches as well. If you are the type of person that will be upset by bad luck foiling a plan Warhammer may not be the best game for you to be playing, if you are the type of person that will look at a crazy low probability play to win line your opponent takes and be able to be hyped and excited with them when it works out you’ll be able to have fun every game.
5-It’s ok to lose, when starting out it’s probably better. I have had some good wins in those 15 or so games and I’ve had plenty of losses. I’ve learned a few things in my wins but learned so much more from my losses. Try not to get upset with losses just try to find at least one thing you could have done better even if you feel like it was out of your hands at points. Take time after games to discuss with your opponent what you could have done differently or ask them why they made certain moves/choices that they did. There are many people with a lot of experience in our community and I’ve yet to run into anyone that isn’t willing to share that knowledge.
6-It’s ok to mess up. I’ve messed up a lot so far in my games of Warhammer and it’s where I’ve learned the most. Whether that’s leaving a Malanthrope 6 inches away from everyone to maximize his aura but leaving him free to be shot at, choosing secondaries that don’t go well with the mission, charging a unit within 3 inches of Ghaz and not thinking about heroic intervention (Poor Swarmlord never had a chance), or trying to be over efficient with splitting fire with a knight and leaving 3 things partially dead instead of 1 unit dead it has all been a learning experience. I remember those things and make sure I don’t do them again.
I am very glad I found this hobby and can’t wait to keep playing and getting to know more of the wonderful people we have in this community. Warhammer can be overwhelming for a new player (Sure was for me) but if they are just willing to ask for some help and get in some games they’ll see it’s far more welcoming than I personally could have hoped for.

Necron Journal Update- vs DeathGuard

IMG_1245Why do i like to lose?

As you know, I’ve been working up my competitive Necrons list and working at becoming a better player.  I’m at game six now.  I hope to manage a hundred games over the course of a year.  My two sons are coming along on the journey with me.  My older son Jonah (19) has already painted up his Dark Angels army and it getting to work on Drukhari.  He hasn’t played even one game yet, I keep selfishly snapping them up each week.  We are both going to a Grand Tournament here in Utah mid-May.  The attendance is likely to top fifty people.

My younger son Griffin (15) is playing DeathGuard.  He’s a good painter, but hasn’t painted his army fully yet.  We’re almost done collecting the figures needed.  We played a 2000 point game yesterday, doing everything by the book so we can learn our armies.  He took me to the cleaners.  I only had twenty Warriors and a Technomancer on the board by the end of turn 2.

Here’s my list:

1x Lord with Resurrection Orb (and nothing else)

1x Chronomancer (throws 5++ on Monolith each turn)

1x Technomancer

1x Iluminor Szeras (he got mowed down by a Drone-mower)

1x Canoptek Reanimator

2x Ghost Ark (each with 10x Warriors)

40x Warriors

1x Monolith

Here are the highlights and what I learned.

1) I got to get rid of the Monolith.  It never does that much before getting blown up.  And it eats up a whopping 6CP just to field it.  But I just love it so much.  Not sure what’s coming in to replace it.  But I definitely need some heavy hitters to go in with the Warriors and countercharge any unit that goes in there to trouble them.

2) I went first and by the end of my turn 2, I controlled all six objectives.  But then I got hit with the DeathGuard elites that just wiped me off the board.

3) It’s Mortarion, I can’t deal with him.  The Monolith got him down to five wounds.  But when he hits in Close Combat it’s game over.  I used Curse of the Phaeron to auto-explode for D6 mortal wounds on so many things.  I killed like five units.

4) The Lord res-orb-ed a unit, used the newly animated models to creep on to an objective and claim it, then during movement I teleported to the back lines and then charged a tank to get them on the back objective.

5) I forgot to re-roll “1”s when I reanimated my Warriors.  Other than that I played a pretty good game.

6) I’m loving the Chronomancer every time.  The Conoptek Reanimator seems not so useful.  I keep giving this cow a chance, but it just underperforms and seems like a flushed 80 points.

IMG_0280 IMG_0289 IMG_0290This is an unusual project we completed at BTP recently.  It consists of seven space marines land raiders with a vast amount of magnetization (magnets).  These make a land raider (the normal kind), a land raider redeemer and a land raider crusader, all three variations which we call a “triple”. The color scheme is the client’s original development.  They also make a land raider helios with missile launchers up top!
