Necrons at Tooele Utah GT 2021

When I saw a grand tournament coming up in late May, 2021, I signed up almost immediately.  I got a slot for my nineteen year old son Jonah as well.  I’ve been playing Necrons for a few months and got in twelve total games with the intent to really learn the army.  Jonah painted up his own Dark Angels force and spent a lot of time researching. I think he clocks a total of six thousand points now, all painted nicely and converted.  He did it with consistent work in his spare time and saving his pennies.

About a week before the tournament I got a text from my old wargaming buddy, Rich Kilton, challenging me to a game, which I accepted, so we were up for round one of the main event.  Rich is a highly ranked player so I was preparing for an uphill battle.  I always seek out the most experienced players so I can improve myself and in Utah I’m spoiled for choice with a lot of great competitors, that’s the only way to get better.

The night before we did all the preparations, including getting a cooler with sandwiches and drinks ready.  I slept OK the night before, just a few butterflies, and woke up naturally at 7am with plenty of time to get the car loaded up. My sweet young wife got up early with me, seeing me off with a kiss.  I got a text saying that my fifteen year old son Griffin didn’t want to come after all since he wasn’t playing and didn’t want to be bored fot twelve hourse, but a text to him and his mom got things moving again.  I drove out to Magna and picked up the boys, showered and dressed decently.  We ate our sandwiches for breakfast along with some fruit smoothies.

We arrived at 9:05 am at a park in rural Tooele.  In the center of the part is a bunker-looking concrete building, tall and with grim flanges all around, no windows.  There were already there at least half of the sixty-two total contenders already there.  We logged on to the pairing app and got our table numbers by 10am.  We brought our own table, just to have all our stuff on it; a base of operations.  The tournament provided loads of water and soda, which was really nice.

I saw one of my former artists there, Ben Larmore, and it was pleasant to catch up with him.  He lives in Tooele now and commented that the small town has improved vastly in recent years.  Indeed, there’s a feel there, that small town feel.  The smell and imposition of large trees, and the sound of birds instead of traffic.

My first game was against Rich Kilton.  He was also there with his son Barrett who has recently married a delightful young lass named Jess.  The three of them were a picture of pleasantness, and it was good to catch up with my old friend.  Several years ago, around 2015, I was going through a hard time and Rich checked in on my regularly even as often as once a week, just like I were family.  He even brought me food when I was running out.  But such mercies were nowhere to be found as we embarked on our first game.  He brought his stompy Orks and while I thought I would turn the tide early on, I was ultimate crushed under the weight of just so many green bodies.

I played against the following armies:

  • Orks (Rich Kilton).  Loss 56-91*  Rich is an old pro.  His army looks amazing and he doesn’t miss a beat.  I’m sure he has many hundreds of games under his belt.  He’s a great sportsman with a positive attitude.
  • Space Wolves (Jake Brookhart).  Loss 46-66  I almost tabled him, but lost sight of my objectives.  His army was painted nicely.  He also has boys who play the game, including a Necrons player, so he knew a lot about my army.  Jake was the only player that provided me with a hardcopy of his army list.
  • Dark Eldar (Eric).  Win 76-53  The dreaded Dark Eldar are paper thin and I just didn’t find the terror of them yet.
  • Orks (James Davis).  Loss 35-91.  I got tabled.  Ork boys are an absolute terror.  A unit of 21-30 of them is typically belting out 80-180 attacks and it’s just so many dice.  They evaporate whole units with ease.  Complete overkill.  The key is to be sure to weaken each unit down to below twenty models so they don’t get the bonus attack.  In this game I made a few key mistakes.  One was to leave ONE ork boy alive which turned into a whole unit of 28x models using the Green Tide strategem.  I also fell back with the Nightbringer which meant she couldn’t charge OR use powers the following turn.  Between these two things, I got steamrollered.
  • Dark Eldar (Trent).  Loss 60-71.  This was the only game where I wasn’t able to complete all five turns in the alloted time.  Time is important.

Thoughts about Time

I finished 4/5 of my games in the 90 minutes alloted (per player = 3 hour games).  I walked into the tournament with a yellow card from not getting my army list in on time (I was twelve hours over) some days before.  Each yellow takes five miutes off the clock.  I won’t make this mistake again.  First, it’s a pain to inform each oppoenent of the penalty.  And in my last game oh how I needed those five minutes.  My intention is to practice again and again until I can get that first turn down to twenty minutes.  As Necrons with a first turn bonus move, and a lot of metal bodies to get down my deployments are very slow.  I also need to get movement trays magnetized so I can speed up deployment.  The timed rounds are a beast, but I would never want to go back, gone is the hemming and hawing.  All my games, even casual ones will be on the clock.  Maybe my opponent can have two or three hours, but I will be playing every game with a strict 90 minute limit.  Lastly, I bought an old-timey wooden chess clock and I just love the hearty click sound it makes with the depression of brass knobs.

We ordered Domino’s pizza for lunch, but after waiting forty minutes for them to make a six block drive we looked it up.  The pizza showed as “delivered” and when we called them they just shrugged.  We hauled out of there to a local burger joint and had the fortunate discovery of “American Burger” where we ate juicy pastrami burgers and super thick and creamy shakes in the parking lot.

That night, as things were winding down, I went outside to take off my mask and sit on a park bench.  Here I was treated to a sunset that looked like a volcanic eruption of red and pink.  And I heard the sounds of birds singing.  Living downtown Salt Lake I now realized that the sounds of traffic and city noise are constant.  I had forgotten the lovely tranquility of small town life.

After three rounds, I was beat up from standing on concrete for twelve hours.  But it was Saturday night and time to get the boys back to mom’s house and get home myself.  A glitch in google maps added forty minutes to the drive.  Brutal.

Yellow Card

I got a yellow card for turning in my army list a day late.  I think this is considered bad because you get to see everyone else’s army list ahead of time.  I won’t make this mistake again.  The five minute per round penalty to time limit is brutal.

Sunday started earlier with dice rolling at 9:10am.  This was my first game where I was tabled.  All my opponents were completely affable and I found them to come from many varied walks of life: a health worker, a chemist etc.

We made a second satisfactory trip to American Burger.  I had a cherry-marshmallow shake.  Then in for a final game.  By this time I felt like an old pro, and had many ideas for the next tournament coming up in June, assuming I can slide onto the list in time.

As the tournament ended and everyone gathered round for trophies and accolades, I was sitting on a chair in the back.  And something occurred to me.  Usually in this situation, I have this intense desire to steal the limelight, to be the center of attention.  But now I had no such sentiment, I was just enjoying being a peripheral part of things.  It’s a huge personality change.  When did this happen?

The tournament hall was filled with good feelings.  It was tangible, and I must at last give a hats off to the head just “Mario” whose booming voice and no-nonsense regulations set just the right tenor for sixty middle-aged nerds playing a game with a lot of rules.

Tips

  • When you have spare moments, group your dice in tens for easy pickup for rolling.  This saves time on your clock and is also courteous to your opponent.
  • Have ten dice in your hands at all times for quick rolling.
  • Before setting up, have your models neatly arranged for quick deployment in groups.
  • Wear shoes with soft insoles or maybe a mat/pad, standing all that time is murder on your feet.
  • Don’t let bathroom time cut into your timed play allotment, take a wiz beforehand.
  • Get pre-judgements on fuzzy rules for your codex beforehand, it saves confusion about poorly worded rules.
  • Likewise, get alternate models pre-approved for play, such as cool conversion proxies.
  • Ask your opponent which models in a unit can see a target on occasion, this also clears up grey areas.

Other impressions

  • Sixty men all arriving fifteen minutes early and trying to hit the bathroom at the same time causes what could best be described as a “crime scene” in the latrine.  I think next time I’m going to show up with a full bathroom kit to class things up in there, ready with an oversize plunger if needed.
  • For the next tournament I think to ask for a vendor’s table to show off Blue Table’s work and maybe add something to the event.

*my score could be mistaken

I played a game today against Colton Hatch’s Adeptus Custodes at 2000 points.  I recorded the game, but the SD card corrupted.  I’m broken-hearted especially since it was my first win with my Necrons 76-68.  Close but definitely a cigar.

I tried out my Night Scythe Bomb aka Tootsie Pop Drop.  1x Night Scythe, 11x Warriors, 8x Lychguard, 1x Technomancer (going to rock a Chronomancer next time).  1) Deploy all next to Night Scythe out of sight, 2) Scoop all up on first turn and jet into positions, (another second Chronomancer lays down a 5+ invuln) 3) if the Scythe is killed use Curse of the Phaeron to auto-explode, then deploy your units, Warriors on the outside (as the hard candy shell) and Lychguard and Cryptek in the middle.  4) Now you have a very inconvenient mini-army wherever you want on the board.  Watch out for surrounds to auto-kill your guys for no reason.  Or use Emergency Disembarkation stratagem.

I used a Technomancer, but won’t make that mistake again.  The Technomancer cleans up problems after they happen.  Better to use Chronomancer to prevent them from happening to begin with with 5+ invuln.  Remember his buff also allows re-rolls to charges.

You can put Iluminor Szeras or a Skorpekh Lord into a Scythe as well.  OR maybe just more scary melee things.

Another brutal beatdown for Shawn. At least I made it to turn three without being to the “mop up” stage.
https://youtu.be/knykBfpsEaY
As usual, I am making a lot of mistakes. Forgetting abilities, failing to properly screen out deep strikers, and mispositioning units. Ghost Arks drifting away from units of Warriors, not shooting pistols and so forth. However, I am getting better. This time I brought a unit of ten Lychguard who helped my Warriors a lot. The basic Warriors are great at taking and holding objectives, but need a bodyguard. Their reanimation abilities are not enough to keep them around. I also love my Gauss Reapers (the 12″ assault gun on the basic warriors), but they rarely get to shoot it as they are caught up in close combat right away. So maybe, trying to mix in some rapid fire 24″ weapons next time.
It’s my seventh game with my Necrons, so I don’t expect to be a master yet, and I definitely see improvement. It’s like anything else. It take a hundred man-hours to get decent, and ten thousand hours to be a Master.

As I played in my second ITC event ever today and a lot of the community talk surrounding Warhammer is revolving around a high profile cheating experience I felt like it was the perfect time to share my new player experience in this hobby of ours. I have about 15 or so games under my belt, six of which have been in a competitive ITC setting. During this time I have had the pleasure of playing against or discussing with many people in the Utah Warhammer community including some of the top competitive players in our state. I can say without a doubt that I have not had a single bad experience during my time jumping into this hobby and getting into the competitive scene. That doesn’t mean that there will never be a bad experience, run in with a cheater, or just someone with a bad attitude but that is the extreme exception not the norm. If you’re interested in playing casually ask for a game, there’s a ton of players looking for a casual game regardless of skill level. If you’re interested in the competitive side of Warhammer I can vouch from experience that this community is a great place to jump into the ITC world and now is a great time for it as the tournament scene is growing with amazing TO’s pushing the community. Here’s some lessons about Warhammer and our community I’ve learned in my short tenure getting into this hobby. (In no particular order)
1-Warhammer is a broad hobby, there’s the painting side, casual playing side, tournament side, literature and lore side. You can have such a fulfilling experience regardless of your preference which is 100% ok and what makes Warhammer great. You can get out of Warhammer what you want to put in. You can be the person that paints once a month, has a game twice a year, or the person grinding tournaments; as long as you get enjoyment from it you’re doing it right!
2-Ask questions! It’s ok to not know all the rules all the time, especially army specific ones. Warhammer is complex game with a lot of rules, no one expects you to memorize every army. There’s a reason we have codex’s we can reference during the game.
3-Now is a great time for Utah Warhammer. We have some extremely dedicated TO’s, teams, and community members that are actively pushing and growing the Utah scene. Especially on the tournament side, what is happening in Utah is very exciting to watch develop.
4-Warhammer is a high variance game. As with most dice games Warhammer is extremely high variance. There is some variance that can be removed with army selection and strategy but in the end there will always be a high degree of variance. Army’s aren’t always balanced and there is also a lot of matchup variance. First turn advantage can make a huge difference in some matches as well. If you are the type of person that will be upset by bad luck foiling a plan Warhammer may not be the best game for you to be playing, if you are the type of person that will look at a crazy low probability play to win line your opponent takes and be able to be hyped and excited with them when it works out you’ll be able to have fun every game.
5-It’s ok to lose, when starting out it’s probably better. I have had some good wins in those 15 or so games and I’ve had plenty of losses. I’ve learned a few things in my wins but learned so much more from my losses. Try not to get upset with losses just try to find at least one thing you could have done better even if you feel like it was out of your hands at points. Take time after games to discuss with your opponent what you could have done differently or ask them why they made certain moves/choices that they did. There are many people with a lot of experience in our community and I’ve yet to run into anyone that isn’t willing to share that knowledge.
6-It’s ok to mess up. I’ve messed up a lot so far in my games of Warhammer and it’s where I’ve learned the most. Whether that’s leaving a Malanthrope 6 inches away from everyone to maximize his aura but leaving him free to be shot at, choosing secondaries that don’t go well with the mission, charging a unit within 3 inches of Ghaz and not thinking about heroic intervention (Poor Swarmlord never had a chance), or trying to be over efficient with splitting fire with a knight and leaving 3 things partially dead instead of 1 unit dead it has all been a learning experience. I remember those things and make sure I don’t do them again.
I am very glad I found this hobby and can’t wait to keep playing and getting to know more of the wonderful people we have in this community. Warhammer can be overwhelming for a new player (Sure was for me) but if they are just willing to ask for some help and get in some games they’ll see it’s far more welcoming than I personally could have hoped for.
-Davis Michael Sturgeon
