Well, the Tau are out of the bag.

Both 3++ and Faeit 212 are reporting that the confirmed release date will be April 6th for the new Tau wave. While I will hesitate to call it confirmed (who confirmed it?) I don’t doubt that it is happening.

That leads me to the Kroot- it appears fate of the bird warriors is still up for debate. Faeit 212 reports that a new allies supplement is rumored for later this year and that Kroot will be part of it. So the question remains, what about Kroot in this new Codex? Faeit points to a few rumors from last year.

Kroot and other existing allies are there, however they are limited. There appears to be an “Allies” supplement which will be out about the same time and include many more options. (aside: Dare I start a Spring of Allies moniker…ah well then it will end up being 2 years from now… )
My sources are telling me kroot are in fact still part of Tau, and have a new unit or two including a beastly transport. They may have more options in a later supplement.
I also checked into the demiurge rumors, and was told “There are no demiurge in the Tau codex.”

I myself am a fan of the Kroot and would hate to see them left out. Right now we are all just holding our breath for the official release.

In the end, it came down to David versus Goliath. Games Workshop chose David- sort of.

When THQ went out belly-up, GW had to decide who would get the new license to produce Warhammer video games  Instead of teaming up with the omnipresent Sega, Games Workshop has reached a new licensing agreement with game developer Slitherine. Confirmed via their website.

“This deal represents yet another testament to our continuous aim to reach new audiences, without losing sight of who we are and what we do best”, said JD McNeil, Chairman of the Slitherine Group. “It’s all about creating strategy games that are targeted to a particular audience and addressing a very specific need in the market. The Warhammer 40,000 setting is a perfect fit for the style of strategy games that we make and will be very popular with fantasy and science fiction fans alike. Joining forces with Games Workshop will allow us to bring an wonderfully deep and appropriate IP to the Turn Based Strategy genre”.

Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing at Games Workshop said: “Slitherine are clearly established and successful masters of their genre of games, and there are many fans of their work here at GW. It’s a pleasure to work with such like minded individuals who share our passion for strategy games of all types”.

So what does the British developer Slitherine offer? Certainly no household names- their “top sellers” include the likes of Panzer Corps, Battle Academy, and Field of Glory. What they do specialize in though is turned based strategy games. This may turn out to be a big risk on Game Workshop’s side, but it may payout with better game-play by people who actually understand turn based games.

It should be noted, that there are reports that this contract is nonexclusive. It would appear other companies (possibly Sega) are still in the mix.

Lil Loser runs a UK based painting blog and recently released a series of photos highlighting his Abaddon and Loken paint-job. If you take a look at the Forgeworld version of the model, you can see how closely he stayed to the original paint scheme. Not only was he able to emulate it so magnificently, but he actually improved it. Great job Lil Loser, you don’t seem like a loser to me at all- I would venture to say a winner. A big winner.

Fresh info from Faeit 212 shows us that the Tau are on the verge of being released next month. You can see below a few pictures of what is in stock for the next release and White Dwarf. It appears there is going to at least be a new Pathfinder team, a few new Broadsides, and a multi-kit flyer. Apparently these images were first spotted at Advanced Tau Tactica.
